Your Next Read: Big Friendship by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman

A book all about friendship? Say less. I had seen this read all over bookstagram this summer and finally caved and bought it a couple weeks ago. I struggle sometimes with non-fiction, self-helpish type books, but this is not at all what you would expect it to be. Aminatou and Ann take stories from their friendship: hard, personal, vulnerable moments in their friendship and share it with the world.

I definitely relate to the feeling of their being some friendships in the world that are just a step past being best friends. That term is so loosely thrown around these days that I like the idea of a big friendship.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars.

Summary: Aminatou and Ann meet through a mutual friend at a Gossip Girl watch party and become fast friends. Eventually, their lives lead them to other cities, but they continually work at their friendship because each feels like it’s worth it. Their big friendship enters some tense moments but over the years they learn how to communicate better and understand each other’s needs more.

The concept of the shine theory is my FAVORITE. Why would you not want your friends to shine? Why do we feel the need to constantly compete? Let’s celebrate each other and love each other and feel joy for each other. I DON’T SHINE IF YOU DON’T SHINE.

Check on your people. Forgive. Talk about what you’re feeling. Keep each other close. I also think the study of how many hours it takes to move from strangers to acquaintances to friends and so on is beyond fascinating and honestly accurate.
